White Sturgeon: Saving a Jurassic Relic
Description
White Sturgeon are one of the oldest surviving species in the world, with fossils confirming their existence as long as 175 million years ago. Now, in the Upper Columbia and Kootenay systems, they are endangered to the point that they have been placed on the provincial red list. Scientists have discovered that these fish, many of which live over 100 years, stopped producing viable young in the wild about 30 to 40 years ago. This WestLand episode will describe the problems facing the White Sturgeon, look into the reasons for their failure to propagate, and discuss the recovery initiatives and partnerships that are working to save this unique species that has survived since the time of the dinosaurs.
