Description

Hand-coloured copper plate engraved map of North America. Based on map by Buache and De L'Iisle (Delisle). Shows the mythical 'Mer de l'ouest' as well as Alaska as an archipelago. Colonies of Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Carolina, Georgia and Florida labelled as 'English Possessions' although France had formally recognized the United States. Notes that French refugees inhabit Charlestown (South Carolina). Palm trees and two figures decorate title cartouche.
