[Bookplate for Marcus Brown Westhead]

Description

In black ink on white paper, this bookplate consists of a shield quartered. First and fourth quarter, argent, two barrulets dancette sable, between three Saracens' heads couped at the shoulders proper, wreathed round the temples, of the first and second. Second and third quarter, azure, on a fesse argent, between three martlets in chief, and the Roman fasces erect surmounting two swords in saltire, and encircled by a chaplet in base or, three chess-rooks sable. Center inescutcheon, party per chevron or and azure, in chief a mullet of six points lies between two crosses pattée of the last, and in base the front elevation of a chapel argent, the whole being charged with a crescent for difference. First crest, on a wreath of the colors, within a fetterlock or, a Saracen's head couped proper, wreathed round the temples argent and sable. Second crest, on a wreath of the colours, a demi-eagle displayed with two heads azure, charged on the breast with the fasces, swords, and chaplet, as in the arms. The escutcheon is surrounded by mantling and below a banner bears the motto 'ORA ET LABORA.'.

Owner was likely Marcus Brown Westhead (c. 1834-November 13, 1897), a merchant and manufacturer who was part of the family firm of J. P. & E. Westhead & Co., manufacturers of cotton and silk trimmings. When J. P. & E. Westhead took it upon itself to recruit and provide funds for a company of the 1st Manchester Lancashire Rifle Volunteer Corps in 1859, Brown Westhead was made Captain, having already been a Lieutenant in the Worchestershire Regiment of Militia from 1852. He was later promoted to Major of the Manchester Rifle Volunteers in 1861. Brown Westhead was also an inventor, submitting applications for and receiving U.S. patents on several inventions involving textiles, including patents for an improved ribbon-roll clip and improved tape boxes, among others. He also invented, or submitted patent protection requests for, improvements for dancing toys, Venetian blinds ladders, and 'adapting or arranging tapes, and other such narrow fabrics and threads for use.' Brown Westhead married Frances Mary, the eldest daughter of John Caton Thompson and Mary Troughton Thompson, in 1855. Brown Westhead lived in Manchester before moving to Lea Castle in the village of Wolverley near the town of Kidderminster in Worcestershire, likely sometime after 1877. He died on November 13, 1897, leaving behind his wife, Frances, and two children, George Montague and Frances Dora Adela. The ex libris of Brown Westhead's father-in-law, John Caton Thompson (1801-?), is also in the Thomas Murray Bookplate Collection, as is the ex libris of his second cousin by marriage, the Reverend Thomas Troughton (1817-1880).
