[Bookplate for Charles Carroll]

Bookplate consists of an escutcheon, in a scalloped chippendale style, charged with two lions rampant, between which is a sword. Escutcheon is charged with a straight wreath and an eagle with wings elevated. Cherub also stands beside the escutcheon.

Based upon family members' use of arms, bookplate likely belonged to Charles Carroll of Carrollton, an early American politician. Charles Carroll (1737-1832) was a senator of Maryland. He is best known as the only Roman Catholic to sign the Declaration of Independence and as the last survivor of the signers of the Declaration (he lived until the age of 95). An early advocate for the separation from Great Britain, Carroll was a member of the Annapolis Convention from 1774-1776, later known as the Assembly of Freemen, an assembly of the counties of Maryland which acted as a revolutionary government against the British. In 1776, he was also commissioned by the Continental Congress to seek aid from Canada along with Benjamin Franklin and Samuel Chase, and served in the Continental Congress until 1778. Carroll also served on the Board of War (1776-1777), helped form the Maryland state government, was elected to the Federal Congress in 1788, and the Maryland Senate in 1781 and again in 1790. After his appointment in 1790, Carroll served the Maryland Senate for his remaining ten years in politics.
